How Do I Test Willingness to Pay?
Short answer
Ask what they already pay, in money, time, or a worse workaround, to deal with the problem today. Ask for a small real pre-commitment where possible. Don’t ask "would you pay for this?" directly.
Hypothetical pricing questions are unreliable because people answer generously when there’s no real cost to saying yes. Two more reliable approaches: find out what they currently spend solving this problem a worse way (a competing tool, a manual process, lost time), and where feasible, ask for a small deposit or early-access fee before the product fully exists.
Questions that reveal real willingness to pay
- What do you currently use to deal with this, and what does it cost you?
- Have you paid for anything to solve this before? What, and how much?
- Would you put down a small deposit to get early access when it’s ready?
- What would make this worth paying for, versus just a nice-to-have?
