Willingness to Pay
Willingness to Pay
Demonstrated evidence that a potential customer will exchange money for a solution to their problem, shown through actual spending, a deposit, or a purchase rather than a stated opinion in a survey.
Someone currently paying for a clunky workaround, or putting down a refundable deposit for early access, demonstrates willingness to pay. Saying "yeah, I’d probably pay for that" does not.
Why it matters
Stated willingness to pay is one of the least reliable signals in early validation because people are optimistic and agreeable when there’s no real cost to answering yes. Demonstrated willingness to pay, even in small amounts, is one of the strongest signals.
