How Many Customer Interviews Do I Need?

Short answer

Aim for roughly 10–15 early interviews, then continue until new conversations stop revealing meaningful new patterns.

The number matters less than whether you’re still learning something new each time you talk to someone.

Ten to fifteen is a practical starting range, not a rule. If the first five interviews all surface the same pain point, the same workaround, and the same objection, you’re probably close to the pattern already. If interview twelve still surfaces something you haven’t heard before, keep going.

What to listen for across interviews

  • Repeated pain points described in similar language
  • Repeated needs: what they wish existed
  • Repeated objections to anything resembling your idea
  • Willingness to pay, or evidence they already do
  • Contradictions between what people say and what they actually do

When to stop

If your last 3–4 interviews mostly confirm what you already heard rather than adding anything new, you have enough signal to decide. Either move forward with a specific hypothesis or narrow the problem and run a fresh round.
