How to Test Startup Demand Before You Build

Test startup demand by asking for a real commitment, such as a deposit, a sign-up with a credit card, a scheduled call, or a switch away from a current workaround. A "yes" to "would you use this?" is not enough. Commitment, even a small one, is the signal; verbal interest is not.

Why "people like it" is not demand

People are polite. Shown a landing page or a demo, most will say something encouraging because disagreeing feels awkward. That reaction is not demand. Demand means someone changes their behavior, spends money, or gives up time because the problem is painful enough to act on.

Ways to test demand, from weakest to strongest signal

  1. 1

    Weak: survey or poll interest

Useful for narrowing which problem to focus on, but a "yes" here predicts almost nothing about actual usage or payment.

  2. 2

Better: ask for an email on a real waitlist

Giving up an email costs a little. It is a weak-to-moderate signal, more useful in volume (hundreds, not a handful) than individually.

  3. 3

Stronger: ask for a small pre-payment or deposit

Someone willing to pay before the product exists is the clearest commercial signal you can get pre-launch. Even a refundable deposit filters out people who were just being nice.

  4. 4

Strongest: watch them abandon their current workaround

If someone switches off their spreadsheet, their manual process, or a competitor’s tool to use your early version, that is demand you can trust more than anything they say.

Common mistake

Treating a high landing-page conversion rate as proof of demand. A good headline converts clicks; it does not prove the underlying problem is painful enough for people to pay to solve.

How FirstSight helps

Before you build any of the above tests, FirstSight checks whether the underlying problem shows up as a recurring pattern in public discussion, including people describing the same failure, abandoned workaround, or frustration. If that signal isn’t there, a pre-payment test is premature. If it is, FirstSight’s verdict and next-step recommendation tell you which demand test to run first.
