Validate a Marketplace Idea Before You Build

Validate a marketplace idea by researching the supply side and demand side separately. Confirm sellers or providers have a real reason to list, and buyers have a real, recurring need, before building the platform that connects them.

The challenge specific to marketplaces

A marketplace needs two validations: supply (will providers or sellers actually list?) and demand (will buyers come and return?). Validating only the easier side is a common mistake. Buyers are usually easier to find than committed suppliers.

Validation process

  1. 1

Define both sides of the transaction

Name specifically who supplies and who demands, and what they each currently do without your marketplace.

  2. 2

Research current discussion on both sides

Search for supplier complaints (where they currently sell/list, and what’s painful about it) and buyer complaints (where they currently search, and what fails).

  3. 3

Identify pain points for each side separately

A strong demand-side signal with a weak supply-side signal is still a weak overall case. Don’t average them.

  4. 4

Test willingness to participate, not just interest

Ask potential suppliers if they’d list something today and potential buyers if they’d transact. Don’t ask only whether the concept sounds useful.

How FirstSight helps

Run FirstSight once for the supply-side problem and once for the demand-side problem, rather than treating the marketplace as a single idea. Compare the verdicts on evidence strength, pain-point clarity, and existing workarounds to see which side needs more validation before you build either half of the platform.
